Begin with Joy

Jingled or Jangled?

– Posted in: Perfectionism

Another holiday season has passed. How did it go?

Were you in a Seasonal State of Bliss?

Or did you feel more like this?

I’m amused by this depiction of a grumpy cat that has had enough and has become a feline Grinch.

Maybe, 2016 left you drained and exhausted because you tried to:

  • Do everything,
  • Make perfect memories,
  • Give perfect gifts,
  • Host perfect parties,
  • Wear perfect outfits …

And yet the odds are that you failed to create that Perfect Pinterest Christmas.

Of course, the December holidays are just one of the many opportunities we have to stress out.

Newsflash – Holidays and other social events do not cause crazy stress. Rather, crazy stress is caused by the mindset of perfectionism.

Our Inner Perfectionist drives us on – demanding that we make a bigger production of things than they necessarily need to be. Telling us that big lie that just being ourselves isn’t good enough. We must be Martha Stewart or Oprah or some other media created fiction.

And what is the result of the perfectionist mindset? Typically, it is:

  • Disappointment
  • Exhaustion
  • Unhappiness

Perfectionism isn’t about seeking excellence. Rather, it’s about seeking the approval of others.

So are you ready to make some changes in 2017? I invite you to consider dialing back your need to avoid mistakes at all costs. Forget about trying to be what you believe others want you to be. Focus instead on what truly brings you joy.

This year, say good bye to the mindset of Pinterest Perfect and all holiday hangovers of regret.

This year, bask in the glow of your authentic (and rested) self.

Make 2017 a year imperfectly full of joyful living.
