As a lifelong “talker to myself”, I was recently pleased to spot one of those internet headlines “Talking to yourself out loud helps boost brainpower and could indicate higher intelligence.” Naturally, I had to click on the link to learn more.
A Bangor University study has concluded that reading instructions out loud allows our brains to absorb more content than if instructions are only silently read.
Reading out loud is a way of gaining control when faced with challenges. And also, as previously stated, talking out loud to yourself may also indicate that you are smarter than the average bear.
There is speculation that athletes verbalizing encouragement to themselves is a way to keep themselves focused. Remember Kevin Costner on the pitching mound in “For the Love of the Game” ? He chatted to himself all the way to a perfect game.
So now I’m thinking that when it comes to sustaining our sense of well-being and joy, we can all benefit from talking out loud to ourselves.
Worth a try. Here’s an easy and effective practice.
Step 1: Write a concise statement of personal intent or encouragement.
Examples:
- I am grateful for my health and will make healthy choices.
- I will approach life from a place of honesty and authenticity.
- I am on the path to financial freedom.
- I can achieve my dreams.
Step 2: Verbalize this statement daily
Say it out loud several times a day – after you brush your teeth, as you drive to work, before you eat a meal, after you exercise – and definitely prior to falling asleep.
What we tell ourselves is so important. Focus on messages that are encouraging and compassionate. You are so worth it!
